Homer Simpson is a fictional character and one of the main protagonists in the American animated sitcom "The Simpsons," which is one of the longest-running and most influential television series in history. Created by cartoonist Matt Groening and first appearing on television in the Tracey Ullman Show short "Good Night" on April 19, 1987, Homer made his debut on the half-hour show "The Simpsons" on December 17, 1989.
Homer Jay Simpson is portrayed as a stereotypical American working-class father. He works at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant and is known for his oafish, lazy, and often ignorant behavior. Despite his flaws, he is fundamentally good-hearted and deeply devoted to his family, even if his actions sometimes suggest otherwise. Homer's signature catchphrase, "D'oh!," typically uttered after realizing he has done something stupid, has become a part of popular culture.
